Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) - About Cosmetic Dentistry Options and Treatments
You’ve probably heard of cosmetic dentistry, but may be a little unsure about exactly what it is. Cosmetic dentistry describes any procedure performed by a dentist that improves the appearance of your teeth and/or your smile. It can be further defined by saying that it is oral care performed to enhance dental aesthetics.
Some common types of cosmetic dentistry procedures include treatments for whiter teeth, porcelain inlays, dental bonding, and dental crowns. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about cosmetic dentistry.
What is the difference between DDS and DDM after a dentist’s name?
- DDS stands for “Doctor of Dental Surgery.”
- DDM stands for “Doctor of Dental Medicine.”
The initials designate the specific degree the dentist has been awarded from a dental school. There is no real difference between the two acronyms, because both DMD and DDS receive exactly the same education in every way. Both of these dental degrees follow the same curriculum as required by the American Dental Association's Commission on Dental Accreditation. The reason there are two different titles is that some schools call the degree a DDS, while others call it a DDM.
Will my insurance cover cosmetic dentistry?
Probably not, because it isn’t necessary or mandatory. In most cases, cosmetic dentistry is an elective procedure, meaning that it is something the patient chooses to do although it is not required for good health. So, you should always check with your health insurer before having cosmetic dentistry done, to find out if any of the expenses will be covered.
Am I a good candidate for cosmetic dentistry?
Ask yourself these questions:
- Are you embarrassed to smile?
- Do you sometimes put your hand up to cover your smile?
- Do you like your smile?
- Do you wish you had whiter teeth?
- Would you like to improve the way your teeth or gums look?
- Are there gaps or spaces between your teeth that make you feel self-conscious?
- Do you have crooked or misaligned teeth that you would like to have straightened or aligned?
If you answered “Yes” to any of these questions, you are a good candidate for cosmetic dentistry. Please see our cosmetic dentistry frequently asked questions section within our main site.
