What are Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-made shells that fit over the front of your existing teeth. They can be used to conceal aesthetic dental imperfections and create a more attractive smile. The size, shape, and color of the porcelain veneers are designed to complement your unique features, while also masking flaws and precisely fitting the teeth. Veneers can be used on their own or in combination with other cosmetic treatments to enhance your smile.
Porcelain veneers are natural looking, durable, and long-lasting. The composite porcelain is resistant to staining and can withstand the daily stress and forces of chewing and biting. In addition, the porcelain material mimics the light reflecting properties of the natural teeth. With proper care, veneers can last for several years.
Porcelain Veneer Candidates
Porcelain veneers are a great option for patients with:
- Discolored teeth - Teeth that have become discolored due to aging, medications, previous dental work, or poor hygiene. Veneers can mask minor to severe stains.
- Worn teeth - Teeth that appear worn down from grinding or regular use.
- Chipped or broken teeth - Minor chips and cracks in the teeth.
- Misaligned, uneven, or irregularly shaped teeth - Minor defects in the shape and size of the teeth.
- Gapped teeth - Excessive space between the teeth.
Placing Porcelain Veneers
The entire placement process for porcelain veneers typically takes between two or three visits to our office. During the first visit, Dr. Zarger will perform an evaluation to determine if porcelain veneers are the best option, or if you would be best suited for another cosmetic procedure.
To begin the veneer process, Dr. Zarger will remove a thin layer of enamel from the teeth to make room for the porcelain shells and create a good bonding surface. Once the enamel has been removed and the teeth are prepared, Dr. Zarger will take a digital impression of the teeth. From this impression, the custom designed porcelain veneers will be created for a precise fit.
Dr. Zarger will place temporary veneers on the teeth after the impressions have been taken. These will be worn for one to two weeks while the permanent veneers are fabricated in a laboratory. When your custom designed veneers are ready, Dr. Zarger will place them on the teeth and make any adjustments necessary to ensure comfort and stability.
